Holy Ghost Vocation Movement

The Holy Ghost Vocation Movement (HGVM) is a Catholic missionary and vocational promotion initiative linked to the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritans). It focuses on encouraging young men to discern and embrace vocations to the Spiritan priesthood and religious life, particularly in South-eastern Nigeria and other African countries. The Holy Ghost Vocation Movement plays a crucial role in sustaining the missionary legacy of the Spiritans in Africa. By nurturing new generations of priests and brothers, it ensures the continuation of evangelization, education, and social justice work in the Spiritan tradition.

Objectives of the Movement.

  • Vocational Awareness: Educating young Catholics about Spiritan spirituality and missionary life.✔
  • Recruitment & Discernment: Helping potential candidates discern their calling through mentorship.✔
  • Formation Support: Guiding candidates through the stages of Spiritan formation (Postulancy, Novitiate, Philosophy, Theology).✔
  • Missionary Zeal: Encourage lay participation in missionary work through donations and prayers.✔

    • Origin & Background.

  • The movement was founded by Fr. Raymond Arazu, C.S.Sp. within the Nigerian Province of the Spiritans as a way to promote vocations to their congregation.✔
  • Inspiration: Rooted in the missionary zeal of the Spiritans, who have been active in Nigeria since the 19th century.✔
  • Key Goal: To inspire, form, and support young Catholics in answering God’s call to missionary priesthood or brotherhood.✔

  • Novena masses are also said for the repose of the soul of one who becomes deceased.✔

    • Sponsorship Categories.

    1. THE BENEFACTORS
      This category offers many the opportunities to contribute their widow’s mite in defraying the tuition fees of the candidates to the priesthood. Below is the framework.
      1. Train a priest for one day
      2. Train a priest for one week
      3. Train a priest for one month
      4. Train a priest for one year
    2. THE SHARED SPONSOR
      (In this category a sponsor defrays one or two of the following fees that make up the total cost for the training of candidate to the priesthood)
      1. Tuition Fee
      2. Boarding Fee
      3. Feeding Fee
    3. THE FULL SPONSOR
      In this category, a sponsor fully defrays the cost for the training of a candidate to the priesthood. This covers Tuition, Boarding and Feeding Fees for one academic session. NB: Though it takes at least ten years for a candidate to the priesthood to complete his programme and get ordained (if God wills). Prospective sponsors have the freedom to decide to what extent they want to get involved. Thus, a sponsor may decide to be part of this scheme for one year, another may wish to carry on for more than one year while some may decide to follow up until the candidate completes the programme. All are welcome on board.

    Furthermore, it is pertinen to note that we also have a piggery farm located at Holy Ghost Novitiate Awo-Omamma, Imo State as a self-supporting project for the office. You are invited to patronize our farm and help us with other projects of the Congregation.
